Swindon Labour Group Response to Grenfell Tower Fire

Our thoughts are with those who lost loved ones or have been made homeless as result of the fire in the Grenfell Tower block in Kensington on Wednesday.

There are lots of questions which need to be answered in relation to this tragedy and its possible implications for our own housing stock in Swindon.

Labour councillors have been in contact with Swindon Borough Council’s housing department ensuring that they are doing all they can to re-assure the residents who live in those blocks.

The council have informed us they have taken the following actions:

• The council’s lead member for Housing, has agreed to bring a report on the council’s approach to fire safety in multi blocks to the Council’s Housing Advisory Forum on the 19th July
• All residents of the tower blocks have received a letter from the council reassuring them of safety measures and a copy of the council’s fire safety leaflet
• The Swindon fire commander has arranged for members of his team to offer home safety checks to every resident of the blocks over the next 2-3 weeks
• Visits by ward councillors and senior officer from the council and fire services to reassure and answer questions from residents are being arranged

Labour Councillor’s lead on Housing, Emma Bushell is meeting with the council’s head of housing to discuss the situation next week.

Labour Councillors will continue to monitor information from the inquiry into the Grenfall Tower fire closely and seek assurances on the safety of high rise blocks in Swindon
